Historical Significance
The Antonov An-22P-3 was a special-purpose modification of the legendary An-22 “Antei.” These aircraft were primarily used by the Antonov Design Bureau and the Ukrainian cargo airline Antonov Airlines for testing oversized cargo logistics, as well as supporting the transport of extremely large components, including wings and fuselage sections of the An-124 “Ruslan” and other heavy-lift aircraft.
Where They Flew
From the early 1990s to late 1990s, the An-22P-3 operated across Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, flying from Antonov's base in Kyiv to aerospace hubs and military logistics centers across the globe. While not part of standard commercial fleets, these aircraft played a vital role in strategic transportation and research missions, testing the limits of what could be airlifted.
