Product Description
The Ilyushin Il-62, registration YR-IRD, served for many years in the fleet of TAROM. It was one of several Soviet long-haul airliners operated by Romania from the late 1970s, mainly for intercontinental routes. The aircraft stood out with its clean white livery, featuring minimal TAROM branding that gave it a modern look for its era. This plane flew to destinations in the Middle East, Africa, and even North America, marking TAROM’s expansion beyond Europe. For the airline, it became a symbol of long-haul capability at a time when Western jets were still beyond reach. YR-IRD was heavily used until it was gradually replaced by newer Western-built aircraft. Today, only archival photos and the memories of its passengers recall this massive Soviet long-haul jet.
