Historical Background:
The Antonov An-12TP-2 with registration CCCP-04366 was a specialized variant designed for long-range transport and geophysical survey missions in polar regions. This aircraft was equipped with a long under-nose radome, a Magnetic Anomaly Detector (MAD) boom extending from the gunner's position, and mission equipment in the insulated cabin. Upon arrival in Antarctica, a ski undercarriage, as used on the An-12PL, was fitted to facilitate operations on snow and ice surfaces.
On June 4, 1967, while operating under Aeroflot's Polar Aviation division, CCCP-04366 experienced a landing gear collapse during landing at Blagoveshchensk Airport. The incident led to the aircraft being written off.
